Insurance Program
While our neighborhoods sleep, the abanyerondo walk. They light up in the dark, whistle at every corner, and are the first knock when something is wrong. We started this program because they should not be the last to have healthcare.
Meet them
In Kinyarwanda, abanyerondo are the community night watchmen — the men (and sometimes women) who walk our streets from dusk until dawn, keeping their assigned block safe. Every Kigali neighborhood has them. Most residents know their whistle before they know their name.
They are paid modestly, often by neighborhood contributions. Many walk 8-hour night shifts, then go home to sleep just long enough to be a father, a farmer, or a small trader by day. When they get sick — and night walking makes people sick — they often have no health cover to fall back on.
The name comes from the word kurondera — to search, to watch out, to look after. That's what they do for us, every single night.
The reality
These are the everyday realities we heard from the men who walk our neighborhood — before we designed the program.
Long night shifts in the rain and cold — chest infections, joint problems, and untreated colds are constant.
Mutuelle de Santé requires an annual payment they often can't gather all at once.
When one falls sick, the family has no coverage — a small illness becomes a debt.
No one had ever asked what would help. Not the sector. Not the residents they protect.
Our answer
Goal Diggers pools contributions from members and covers full-year Mutuelle de Santé for each participating watchman and his household.
Full annual Mutuelle de Santé for the watchman and his immediate family.
Payment made directly to the sector office — never in cash to the watchman.
Renewed automatically every year, as long as our members keep giving.
No paperwork on their end. We handle registration, they get the card.
The math
That's the annual Mutuelle de Santé premium for a working adult in Kigali (Category 3). For a watchman and his household of five, we're talking about roughly 30,000 RWF for the year — the cost of one dinner out.
Which is why this program works. Small monthly gifts add up fast when the number they're covering is honest.
In practice
Every franc goes to a real person you could meet. Here's what different amounts cover.
RWF / year
Covers one watchman for a full year.
RWF / year
Covers a watchman and his household — a family of five.
RWF / month
A monthly gift that adds up to one full family covered by year-end.
